Blowing Kisses and Saying "Baby"
Cecilia really likes her mother, and is less interested in me than her. Right before she goes to bed I get to read a story with her. It could be any one of a number of books that she has. After the story ends, I'll hand her off to her mother who will go and put her down for the evening, but not before I can blow a kiss to Cecilia. She's been watching this event happen for months now. But only very recently has she started to blow kisses back.
It's very cool how much children learn. They're little sponges about nearly everything. She does a couple different styles of blown kisses. Both involve the hand from the mouth and away. There is never any actual blowing. One of them is making a "mmm" sound right before moving her hand away. The other is a type of kiss sound before moving her hand. Either way, it's pretty cute.
She's picked up a few tricks recently. We've just talked about the blowing of kisses. She's still just taking a few steps between objects. She'll wave hello and goodbye. She attempts to make cow and dog noises (but they sound very similar). Overall it's pretty cool.
It's amazing to see how she communicates. We've been working with her on a couple sign language signs. She does versions of "more" and "milk". "More" is signed (by her) as both of her hands with fingers extended (aimed vertically, or close to), and her right thumb tapping (fairly perpendicular) the middle of her left palm. The other sign, for "milk" (which we use for a drink of any fashion), she tends to twiddle her thumb across the bottom of all of her fingers. Neither sign is correct, but they get the message across, and she gets the things that she needs. It's baby talk with the hands.
The other communicating stride is in talking. Just like any other kid, it's a developing skill. She makes attempts at saying "light", "ball" and "bye-bye". Her absolute closest word that she's pronounced is "baby". I've got to count it as a real word, since she has fairly clearly said it on multiple occasions, and always in context. She has a Christmas book with baby Jesus. She's pointed him out on multiple occasions calling him "baby". She's called a doll that, as well as another drawing of a baby. I think it's pretty cool.
