Longbored Photos

I've added a new photo section to LBS. It's nothing special, but it works. I have to say that I really like Simple PHP Gallery. The dude's website seems to always be down, like he hasn't paid his bill, or he gets too much traffic. Despite the site always being down, the system works like a charm. With hardly any setup, it's really easy to customize, and extremely easy to use.

Check out Longbored Photos here and download a copy of Simple PHP Gallery here. I'm willing to answer basic questions.

Sure, I suppose I could have continued to use the gallery already setup at my other home, but that would have been the easy way out. This one is nicely built into the site, and looks good too. That, plus considering the fact that it took me less than 1/2 hour to get going… it's a little hard to beat. I hope to have less formal pictures up in this gallery, but we'll see how that goes.

Clifton had sent another fairly simple photo system to me, which I thought would be worth mentioning. You can find it at http://www.plogger.org. I might have to give it a shot, just because I'm bored... as usual.

Have you tried Plogger yet? I installed it for my cousin and it seems to work okay. The CSS was a little frustrating to deal with cuz it's all over the place (reminds me of MT).

Let me know if you've compared the two and which you'd recommend.

Okay, for those of you who may actually USE Simple PHP Gallery, I have just discovered the solution to something that HIGHLY annoyed me. If you modify the file, and you're looking to do anything special to it... just keep in mind that you can't change the permissions on the sp_index file. That's right... if you change the permissions on the file, it won't work at all. Despite your desires to set it to 777, 757, or 747... just don't do it. It ONLY works if you've got it set to 000. Lame.

Well..... after enough slight problems, and the need for a functioning photo gallery... I have grudgingly moved to Plogger. I don't really care for it, since you HAVE TO have an album for a photo, and a collection for an album, and no albums within albums. Simple PHP Gallery let you put pictures anywhere, and let you bury folders as deep as you wanted. The resizing is a little funky, since it only works with a default HEIGHT. So.... if you take your pictures both landscape and portrait style... it will NOT create thumbnails based on the photo's orientation. So your portrait shots come out the same height as your landscape ones, but skinnier. Lame.

I REALLY like(d) Simple PHP Gallery. It's name is exactly what it implies. I think I overloaded it with too many CSS demands, and it wasn't really fair of me. May it live a long and fruitful life.

Welcome-ish to Plogger. (see link above)

Well, here we are… a year and half after the fact, and with no development progress ever made on Plogger, and me outgrowing the storage capabilities of the server, I'm very pleased to have now moved over to Flickr. So far, I love it.

I'll keep a copy of Simple PHP Gallery on my site, since I still really like the simplicity of it, but for larger photo galleries, pay the $25/year and get yourself a Pro Flickr account. I really think it's worth it.
