Lo

At first she just shook her head at us. We thought for a while that she just liked how her hair felt against her face as she waved it back and forth. Later, we realized that she was actually saying (or motioning) that most-dreaded word from all - no.

Everybody learns the word. It's essential in our lives - agree/disagree, confirm/deny, accept/reject, permit/disallow, whatever. Our lives are filled with decisions, and Cecilia's is no different.

After just the head-shaking came the next iteration of it - "oh" (pronounced just like the end of "no", but without the N). She'll say it just like we say it - a little drawn out. She'll still shake her head from time to time, and the message remains the same.

Recently, the best one of all has shown up - "lo". I'd like to convince myself that she's trying to speak Spanish, and making a lot of references to objects in her extremely limited dialect, but that's not the case. Really with this version also came the attitude. She still does the longer version, but she's also developed the shortened, snotty version.

Although she's actually said "no" a few times already, her primary version is "lo". It's only a matter of time before she makes that final plunge into the worst word any child her age (through roughly 2 or 3) ever learns. Brace yourself folks.

Can' you just pretend that you didn't know what she was saying until until she can properly pronounce the word, which will be soon enough. Ignorance is bliss!

good luck, dude. They only have more to say from here. How 'bout when she starts telling you to "go away," or "don't touch," or "I do it!" For all the more they have to say, some of it can be hilarious, but there's a price to pay for an expanding vocabulary.

It's haunting. The worst is when she says it con autoridad. She's a sassy one!
