2006.05.01 Walking Canes

To me, if you walk with a cane, and don't put very much weight on it, yet you walk at a very quick pace… why walk with a cane at all? Do you just keep it with you so you can beat unsuspecting observers? I could see very clearly in the example I'm speaking of that it wasn't a walking stick, but a cane - and the lady was moving fast. She sort of had one of those hunched-over walks that says, "Best watch yourself, since I'm coming through, and if you get in my way… I'll thwack ya' good!" Go figure. (on a side note, I'm pleased to say that my spell checker acknowledges 'thwack' as an actual word)

2006.04.24 Windshield Wiper Speed

It's raining again. It seems that some people have no concept of matching their windshield wiper speed with the amount of rain that is falling on their windshield. Maybe they're oblivious to the sound of their wipers doing that whole semi-wet rubber skipping across glass. Even if they're not making that noise, they're still going faster than a fat guy towards an open buffet line.

2006.03.09 Conference Them In

Frequently I am on conference calls at work. For some whacked reason, people think that none of us is as smart as all of us, but they fail to grasp the effectiveness, or lack thereof on a conference call. Sometimes, while on a call, people feel the need to get somebody else on the call that wasn't on the call to begin with. So what do they do? They end up calling the poor sucker, and conferencing them in the second that they answer the phone. Now they not only have to talk to the person they thought was calling (thanks to caller ID), but a whole group of people.

2006.02.23 Car-Capades

I went to Jiffy Lube recently for my annual safety and emissions inspections. My car is a bit older than most, but it still works like a charm. To make a long story short, it failed the safety inspection. The guy was nice enough to point out a small hole in my exhaust (not the one at the end, but one in the middle of the pipes/tubes), complain that my rear window's brake signal was covered by tinting (despite the fact that it's always been covered, and this exact same guy has let me slide for the past 3 or 4 years), and my front-left turn signal was out.

2006.02.07 How Are You

I talk to a person at work several times a day, by phone, for business reasons. I get called because they have a question, which I am able to answer. They are in a learning phase, so it's perfectly acceptable to get these questions and phone calls. The part that is weird/annoying to me is that each time I get called, I get asked "How are you?" Do you think it's changed? Does it really matter? Tell me what you're calling for, and let's get this show on the road.
