When I viewed the racing nodes demo of axono.me I immediately thought of this. If I were really fancy, and actually knew what I was doing, I'd probably do the following:

• Fix the shadow so it shows the full length of the characters
• Make the characters dynamically generated, instead of being static png's
• Have two different form for the characters. One for standing still, and the other for when they jump
• Fix the track so it extends to where they actually stop
• Pretend there isn't a seemingly ever-present issue with z-indexing and html
